MARY R. WATERS SCULPTURE WORKSHOP
March 11th and 12th

LGAA Members $160 (use coupon code provided in link to get this price)
Non-Members $180

Mary will be our demonstration artist at the March 10th meeting at 6pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting (LGAA members & Non-members).

Please note that the workshop follows directly on the next day after our LGAA Monday Membership Meeting. Therefore, try to sign up early before the monthly meeting if possible.

March 11th Tuesday 9AM to 4PM
Mary will talk about the how to use a wooden base, the lazy susan, the armature, and the application of the clay. Students will receive enough clay to create a sculpture approximately 3-6" tall. Casting is very expensive so we will keep it small so that it will be affordable. Mary will also talk about where to take our sculptures to be cast should we decide to.

March 12th Wednesday 9AM to 4PM
Mary will answer questions at the beginning and then students will work on their sculptures until finished. During that time Mary will spend time with each student to encourage and point out what they need to work on to improve or finish their work.

Supplies to be mostly provided but students should bring:

  1. Found tools such as a sharp knife, dental tools, popsicle sticks, manicure sticks, etc. Also bring a lazy susan (a circular tray that spins normally used for spices).
  2. Pictures for reference (Keep in mind that bronze is a heavy metal so delicate flowers or other delicate things are not the best subjects.)
  3. Students need to start thinking about what they want to sculpt.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
My teachers noticed I could draw realistically at an early age and they gave me many opportunities to draw. As a youngster in the 4-H club I participated in photography and exhibited my show steers, among many other projects. I studied art and received a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Art Education at Asbury University. I taught high school art for a total of 24 years in 7 different schools in 3 states, where ever my husband’s work took us. After twenty-four years of teaching art in public schools, I decided to retire and travel with my husband and do my own art.

God has blessed me with many opportunities to learn and He has put people in my life who have taught and encouraged me. In 1987, I apprenticed with a sculptor, Barvo Walker, and learned the lost wax method of casting bronze. He encouraged me to create my own sculptures, and so I began sculpting my first piece called, “Work’s About Done.” I was so excited because my very first sculpture sold before it was even cast!

Since then, I have sold my work in numerous galleries and art shows, and have been commissioned by various organizations. My work can be found in many collectors’ homes as well. Each of my sculptures is a limited edition and has a Scripture reference to help broaden the owner’s experience.

Get ready for an exciting workshop!
