The goal of this course is to develop conceptual skills for idea-based painting, with instructor demonstrations and in-class sketch & painting sessions. The final goal will be a completed painting that solves a specific conceptual assignment. Both one-on-one and group critiques will be involved, and each student will present their work in both sketch and final painting stages to the class for feedback. Q&A on professional practices will also be offered.

DAY ONE

  • 10am - 12:00 noon
    Introduction & explanation of class goal
    Students introduce themselves and show 3-5 examples of their work
    Assignment outline: Animal/Object
    Lunch
  • 1pm - 2:45pm
    Acrylic painting demo - basic layout (sketch transfer and block in)
    Break
  • 3:00pm - 5:00pm
    Sketch Session 1: In-class sketch development and one-on-one review/feedback


DAY TWO

  • 10am - 12 noon
    Group sketch presentation and critique (2-3 sketch ideas)
    Lunch
  • 1:00pm - 2:00pm
    Sketch Session 2: In class sketch refinement
    Break
  • 2:15pm - 5:00pm
    Paint Session 1: Begin in-class painting and one-on-one review/feedback


DAY THREE

  • 10am - 12:00 noon
    Paint Session 2: In class painting and one-on-one review/feedback
    Lunch
  • 1pm - 2:45pm
    Paint Session 3: In class painting and one-on-one critique
  • 2:45-3:00
    Break
  • 3:00pm - 5:00pm
    Group final presentation & critique

ABOUT MARC:

Marc Burckhardt's paintings have been commissioned by Gucci, Porsche, SLS Resorts, Stag's Leap Vineyards, Amazon, TIME, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, and Random House, among others. His gallery work includes exhibitions at Art Basel (Switzerland & Miami), Affenfaust Galerie (Hamburg), Copro Nason (LA), Mindy Solomon Gallery (FL), and the Arts Students League (NY).

In 2011, he was commissioned to create the official portraits for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Ceremonies, and his paintings are in numerous private collections. His work has won many awards, including Gold & Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators and Cannes Lion, as well as a Grammy for Best Limited Edition Box Set Packaging for "The Legend: Johnny Cash."

Marc is past President of the Illustration Conference (ICON) and chairman of the NY Society of Illustrators 47th Annual. A former instructor at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and Texas State University, he was named Texas State Artist by the Texas Legislature and the Commission on the Arts, and is a recipient of the prestigious Hamilton King Award.
